A Guide to Salesmanship

Sales! – This word can bring memories of a person’s worst or finest moment.  If you are considering the possibility of going into a sales related job then you can use this article as a guide that will tell you more about the world of sales and how you can overcome the many obstacles you will find along the way.

Sales is not an easy topic to tackle and as far as management goes if you are making sales then that’s all that matters but, there is a lot more than meets the eye, let’s take a look.

A People Business

Let’s face it, sales is a people business.  In no other line of work will you be required to deal with as many people as you will in sales, and for those who are thinking ” customer service, customer service!” let’s just say that a salesperson does a lot of customer service during and after the sale.  Because of the fact that you will be dealing with a lot of people on a daily basis you need to improve your people skills because the better you become at dealing with people the more sales you will have and the more friends you will make along the way.

Personal Appearance

No one buys from people they do not like, that is a fact tha.  Even if you don’t have a $1,000,000 wardrobe you must always try your best to look good for your customers and clients because in this line of work first impressions are very important.

Knowing your Product

There’s nothing worse than going to a store where the sales person knows nothing about the product they are selling, this can be quite frustrating for the buyer because many times they want to buy the item but the mixed signals that they get from the sales people can actually discourage them from buying at this particular store and if they don’t buy from you they will buy from someone who will make them feel comfortable with the product they are getting.

Taking your time to learn the ins and outs of your product will be the best weapon when facing rebuttals which as you will learn, are just buying signals.

Create a sense of Ownership – Paint the picture!

When you present a product to a potential buyer you will always want to paint the picture of what it would be like for them to actually own the product that you’re selling them.  Selling people on the benefits a particular product has to offer may not be enough to close the deal, but creating a sense of ownership can help you with the final and most important step of the sale process.

Learn how to Close

This is the step that divides the rookies from the pros.  In order to be successful when closing the sale you must have fulfilled all the steps that we have laid out for you, if you haven’t, you’re very likely to get a NO for an answer, if you have not engaged your buyer into a full sense of ownership and they do not feel emotionally attached to the product you’re selling then you will get the negative response, if this is the case do not get discouraged, you will get a lot of negative responses before you get a positive one and that is just the learning curve that you will have to go through in order to become a good salesperson so grow a thick skin and do not let the negatives discourage you because most of your success depends upon your own psychology and approach to problems.
